SPARE TIRE SOLUTION (June 1988 Antic Magazine) -------------------------- "The Great Underground Text Adventure", also know as "Spare Tire" is a rather clever text adventure that has a lot of "red-herring" objects that are not used at all. There are two objects that are used twice: the Lighter, and the Diner's Club Card, so once you use an object, drop it. First we will give some hints and help, and the last part of this article is the complete solution for those who are completely stumped. You can SAVE and LOAD on as many as 9 data files, so you don't have to start over every time you get killed. Hit the Atari Logo key for monochrome display. The object is to go underground to find a spare tire, then find your way out again, an awful lot of trouble just for a spare tire. DOORS: There are only 2 locked doors, others you can just OPEN DOOR. One door requires that you INSERT KEY, the other INSERT PIN (purple pin). The key is in the smokey room, just open the window. The pin is in the bathroom, in the sink. STAIRWAYS: Do NOT go UP or DOWN stairways. You can SLIDE BANISTER to go down, and you get back by SWIM POOL. Don't attempt to swim until you find the bottle of aspirin, otherwise you will get sick and die. LOGS: Use the Lighter to burn them, then when you find the Kettle (in the Kitchen of the restaurant), you drop the Kettle on the fire. Then take it directly to the Ice room and pour the hot liquid over the ice. MASK: You can't get the mask past the Wizard, so if you read the writing on the wall where you find the mask, you will see that the Bare Room is where you can drop it and recover it later in the Queer Room, and WEAR it to get up through the dusty rooms. SHOVEL: Used obviously to dig, but only in the Basement, at the spot marked with an "X". RESTAURANT: No hippies, so you have to give yourself a haircut, and also find the Diner's Club Card. Look in the Jacket for the card. Use the knife to cut your hair. MAN: He won't let you pass until you give him something, but be sure you are done with the credit card before you give it away. VAMPIRE: You have to get past the man to get the cross, then chase down the vampire and he will bug out. BOULDER: You use the dynamite and lighter to blow it to bits. (Don't stick around after you light it!) RAT: Find the trap, and bait it with the cheese to catch the rat. ELEVATOR: You have to push the right button, but be sure you have the tire before you leave, that's the whole point. The wrong color will just transport you back into the underground and you have to find your way back to the elevator.
